There are important terms you need to know and understand in order to learn, practice and play volleyball correctly. Basic Skills in Playing Volleyball – Learning How to Jump Higher with Vertical Jump Training (Part I) deal summarily on the following skills such as serve and set.

Serve

To start the game, it is important to serve the ball which may be executed in different ways like (1) Underhand, (2) Sky Ball Serve, (3) Topspin, (4) Float, (5) Jump Serve, and (6) Jump Float. In order to do any of these means, the server must step on the inside line at the rear to drive the ball over the net and into the court of the team’s opponent.

When you serve, aim for an ace! A good serving player skillfully controls exactly where the ball should land. If you are the server, it is important to master and employ the techniques of direction, speed and acceleration to make it difficult for your opponent to defend the ball properly.

The serve is an ace if the ball has landed onto the court of the opponent court, or when it travels, rolls, or goes outside of your opponent’s court after it has been touched by any member of that team.

Set

In volleyball, teaching and learning how to set is one of the hardest skills. In order to master the skill which is also referred to as the super soft touch really takes time devoted to practicing the techniques. Typically, setting is the second contact of the team with the ball. Setting is usually done by tossing the ball in the air in such a manner that it can be driven over the net into the opponent’s court.  The setting player must coordinate with the team for offensive tactics.

The setting player makes the final decision which among the team players would attack the ball. However, the setter may not raise the ball for any hitter and can attack it directly returning the ball onto the opponent’s court. This execution is called the dump! The dump can result in a kill especially when the opponent is caught off-guard and fails to defend the attack.

An opposing team can make a surprise attack by either (1) throwing the ball behind the setter, or (2) throwing the ball in front of the setter onto zones 2 and 4. Typically, more experienced setters either spike the ball on the second hit or toss it into some deep and unguarded corners of the opponent’s court.
