Mixed Wrestling Quick Guide

Mixed Wrestling

Mixed wrestling can also be known as Intergender Wrestling and has become increasingly popular over the years.

It is a type of professional wrestling between a women and a man. They can often also be a carried out in  a tag team formation.

Quick guide

Popularised in the Late 1970’s by Andy Kaufman.

Andy Classified himself as the Mixed Wrestling Champion although he was a comedian first and foremost.

Andy offered open challenges to any women that could beat him.

A surge of popular interest happened around the 1990’s.

Mixed wrestling became part of popular events such as Extreme Wrestling Championships, World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling.

Chyna is the most successful female mixed wrestler and was three times intercontinental champion

Some other famous mixed wrestlers are Luna Vachon, Jacqueline, Madusa and Lits

There is some talk that mixed wrestling has steered away from its normal commitment to become something more erotic.

Mixed Wrestling is something which has been developed over the years. There are lots of different and common reasons. Some say that it was to prove that women were stronger than men in the pelvic and thigh areas. This is often shown in the bouts were the female wrestlers hold the men tightly around their neck area and beat them into submission.

I guess mixed wrestling is a topic of choice but its highly popular following makes this an interesting subject. Although I would say it s far away from the World Wide Wrestling you see on television. These ladies mean business and for any man that takes a female wrestler on. Then I wish them the best of luck.

I hope you enjoyed this quick guide. Check out the site to learn more about Mixed Wrestling http://ift.tt/25A6LwQ

Top 5 Coaching Boards

Top 5 Coaching Boards

Pointing fingers and yelling across the field is not the easiest way to get players in line. So how can you illustrate to players where they should move on the court or field?  The dry erase coaching board.  I don’t know who invented them but coaching boards have saved thousands, if not millions, of coaches the frustration of trying to get athletes to share their vision.

Coaching boards started out as simple chalk boards with court diagrams drawn on them.  A basic idea that has been improved over the years.  Now coaches can use dry erase boards that boast color basketball courts and green fields, accurate field diagrams and even magnetic player pieces.

Whether your buying a coaching board for yourself or as a gift for your favorite coach with so many options out there it’s hard to keep track of what’s new on the scene and which models are the tried and true.

Come with me as we take a quick look at the Top 5 Coaching Boards for 2008 according to sales at Morley Athletic.   We’ll start with the 5th most popular model and work our way to the #1 most popular coaching board.

History of Skateboarding.

Skateboarding began in Southern California sometime in the late 40s or early 50s. Southern California has some of the most popular surfing spots in the state which attract surfers from all over the world. Even when the waves were not right the surfers wanted to be able to surf so somehow skateboarding evolved, no one really knows who built the very first skateboard, but the idea caught on and spread like wild fire. Today there are skateparks, ramp skating, trick skating and the Skateboard itself has evolved to allow skaters the ability to perform very complicated tricks and maneuvers.

History of Snowboarding.

The first Snowboard was called the Snurfer and was manufactured as a toy in 1966. I was basically a Skateboard with no wheels that you would steer with a rope. It had no bindings but would allow your boots to adhere to the board. In the early 70s a surfer developed a Snowboard called the Winterstick based on the feel of a surfboard but with the same function as skis. Through the years Snowboards and Snowboarding have increased greatly in popularity with the boards now being designed to enable Snowboards to race and perform freestyle tricks.

History of Skiing.

Skiing began as a means of travel and transportation. Sondre Norheim of Norway helped develop Skiing as Recreation and a Sport. In the mid to late 1800s lighter, thinner, cambered skis and a new stiff binding were developed which made it possible for skiers to swing, jump and maneuver turns while skiing down hill.

Some types of skiing are;

Alpine Skiing is what you do when you go to a ski resort, ride the lift and let gravity propel you down the run.

Alpine Freestyle or Jib skiing is where skiers use jumps or kicks to do aerial tricks.

Back Country Skiing or Nordic touring uses Nordic style equipment which allows skiers to ski up hill in areas where there are no chairlifts.

Cross Country Racing is one third up hill, one third downhill and one third flat.

Adaptive Skiing is done by people with physical disabilities and allows for adaptations to standard ski equipment.

Military Skiing is recreational and a means of transportation for the military, many armies train for ski warfare.

Nordic Jumping or ski flying is where skiers slide down a ramp and fly to see who can to the furthest before landing on the ground.

Nordic Skiing is the most popular style and does not require a special ski area and was developed in Scandinavia as a means of travel in winter.

Telemark skiing uses flexible ski boots that do not lock the heels into the skis which allow the skier to travel at higher speeds.

History of Cycling.

Cycling has grown in popularity over the years and throughout the world. In some countries it is a means of transportation through very narrow streets that will not allow cars to travel or countries where cars are too expensive. Cycling as a sport has increased in popularity throughout the world as well and uses bikes that are specially designed for the terrain and speeds.

Action Sports Gifts.

Basketball Strength And Conditioning Workout ? – Read This Now !

If you find yourself wanting to know more about a different basketball strength and conditioning workout then you must read the following article – it will have the effect of revolutionizing all you currently understand about playing basketball. What if we told you that you can improve your skills in the game by an incredible 30%? Even better, it can be accomplished by working at it at home. Even if you are a nonbeliever, or find it just plain unimaginable, continue to read this brief report – it is going to shock you.

Before we begin, you need to know a significant piece of information – in the game of basketball it is not about which player is a better runner or jumper, but about who makes better decisions and fewer mistakes on court. The expertise to figure out what your opponent is planning, or to decide on the spot whether to pass or try to shoot, relates to your cognitive or thought process, in a nutshell: brain skills. A lot of people have the incorrect notion of these abilities as innate, or inborn gifts, when in actuality, they are not “natural instincts,” but actually are cognitive skills anyone can acquire.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re simply looking forward to knowing about a different basketball strength and conditioning workout, or whether you play on your junior high, high school, or college team – you can dramatically improve your game strategy and build up your scores by “training” your brain. A team of scientists has created an amazing computer application which empowers you to doing that; using the very user-friendly format of a “video game”, the user simply “plays” it for only twenty to thirty minutes, one to two times a week, for few short weeks – the results are stunning. Head coaches from all across the country, including memphis, uconn, and others, have reported amazing results after one-on-one coaching sessions with players, and even entire teams, with this amazing solution.

Before finding out more about a different basketball strength and conditioning workout, i recommend that you sample this amazingly effective and innovative solution. It seems like the dream of one day playing with the pros for a lot of school to college players is becoming so close and attainable; those who used the system reported an overall dramatic improvement after “practicing” with this system for less than a month.

Youtube Whitetail Deer Hunting Videos – 4 Overlooked Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Tricks to Greatly Increase Your Odds

Youtube Whitetail Deer Hunting Videos

Millions of hunters all over the United States eagerly await hunting season to apply deer hunting tips and tricks they have learned over the years. They are all excited to see who can shoot the biggest deer, or who can kill the deer with the largest rack. The following paragraphs will provide the reader with some basic tips and tricks associated with hunting for deer.

Firstly, many seasoned hunters will suggest that you do not bath or apply cologne or deodorant before hunting for deer. The deer have a keen sense of smell, and are deterred by our normal hygiene products. This is why you see so many men unshaven when they go deer hunting. They do not want to decrease their chances of shooting a deer by using hygiene products to shave. This also applies to laundry soaps. I like to hang my cloths outside on the line for a week or so depending on the weather. Then I keep my hunting cloths in an old cooler with pine bows and cut up apples.

Second, in order to increase your chances of shooting a deer, you need to avoid other hunters. It only makes sense. Deer do their best to avoid hunters. Areas overpopulated with hunters do not tend to have very many deer. You will very seldom see big whitetail deer where there is a lot of hunting pressure. Youtube Whitetail Deer Hunting Videos

Thirdly, another way to increase your chances of getting the deer you want is to change your deer stand or blind location periodically. Having multiple stand/blind locations will definitely be to your benefit. A whitetail will spook if they senses that you’re hanging out in one area too long. It only takes a big
whitetail one time to spook them out of an area. Also multiple stands allows you more options to hunt according the the wind direction.

Tip: Deer will travel according to the thermals. As the air warms up throughout the day your scent will rise uphill. Multiple stands will give you the opportunity to take advantage of positioning yourself in the best possible advantage points.

Finally, if you want to increase your chances of shooting a deer, you should hunt as long as possible, especially during the phases of the rut. Most deer are shot either at dawn or at dusk, however, during the rut the buck are moving all the time. Also most hunters have a hard time setting for long periods of time. So….between 9:00 am and 11:00am these guys will be starting to move around. Consequently… if their are any deer in the area they will get pushed. If you are still setting in your stand your odds of getting a deer greatly increase. I would say most of the deer I have shot have been between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten down from my stand only to spook deer walking in to me. If I had only sat for 15 more minutes I might have had a shot. Can you relate? Any way keep this in mind the next time you want to quit early, even fifteen minutes early, you may miss the shot you’ve been waiting on all day. Just remember to be patient, though. Patience is a virtue when it comes to deer hunting. Youtube Whitetail Deer Hunting Videos

The Importance of Sports Uniforms for your Team

In every country of the world sports and games are an integral part of the culture. Sports ranging from basketball to soccer, ping pong to volleyball, are played throughout the world. There are sports leagues for children and non-professional athletes as well as high-profile, competitive professional leagues. Sports uniforms, when worn by the members of a team, help spectators easily identify and differentiate team members within a team as well as the different teams from one another.

In addition to unifying and representing a team, sports uniforms that have a company logo or business name on them can be an effective form of advertising as well. Since the audience for some professional sports can be quite huge, and if televised include millions of people, a lot of potential customers will see the business name on the players uniforms. Uniform advertising is a great way to introduce a new business and create brand awareness to a much wider market. When there is a big sporting event, the company sponsoring a certain team will often have their name on the team uniforms.

When star players wearing their sports uniforms are featured by the media or interviewed on television, it creates great press for the company. By means of this method of publicity people from around the world who are watching their favorite athletes can become interested in the company and its business. That is why more and more big companies today are also entering into the world of sports by sponsoring popular teams from around the world.

Sports fans can become very passionate about their teams and closely identify with them. Even the mood of a sports fan can be dictated by how well or badly their team is doing. This strong identification with a team makes fans an easy target for advertisements and an obvious market for related businesses.

For some teams their sports uniforms can also communicate a particular message or meaning. Sometimes through their uniforms players can show grief for a fellow player or event, or support an organization, or show unity with a cause by wearing an arm band or special color on their uniforms.

Indeed sports uniforms serve many purposes. They create unity and an identity for the team, business sponsors can use uniforms for ad campaigns, and uniforms can even be used to send a message. For all these reasons, sports uniforms are an essential part of the world of sports.

Warming Up Before Volleyball

All the times that I am obtained with a chance pass above one of the best pieces of council I’ve ever obtained from one of my coach and this end of volley ball must make with what occurs Before the match of volleyball even starts. The council is as follows… when I’m in my striking line… shows the players of opposition of team of volley ball striking pre-heating.

By this time the you’ve had your right of maintenance of preparation of team? Your trainer has you known as pretty much who makes what on the other team. Spout out now that its before the play now that you have time. Show!

a. Observe and identify which you could have to block in front of you.

B Show how they struck the ball.

C Does it strike the way downwards?

D. Is its armswing slow?

E It has a rapid or the slow rupture of wrist makes its blow in other words goes down or enters the court a long time.

F it always face the court transversely when it wants to strike the court transversely or it struck more

its shoulder to disguise it projectile.

Does it always claim a high regulated ball or strikes it a growth regulated as well? Seek the indices in pre-heating as for what your bruisers of opposition do then think already of the way in which you must block this person or of the way in which late you must wait in your squatted posture of block before you jump against a particular bruiser.

Make the same thing in the pre-heating of portion. As you shagging your ball – keep an eye above WHERE the members of the starting team of opposition tend to always be useful. If the left bruiser on side served the major part of his pre-heating the court is useful transversely – you can bet that it isnt energy to draw too much from surprised in the play and to do something completely different that what saw it to you doing in pre-heating. The players like to heat competence that they carry out the best in heat rises. If you are alert that you can envisage the alot from which player will make – during the play.

If it is used for 5 the court transversely and 1 to the bottom the line – what will you say to your team to look at outside for this service across court first-right?

The last minutes of pre-heating and before you align to begin the play YOU can speak to your team-members and the share with them what are your observations salt of gallon of Hey just struck court transversely of the 5 last one balls that that which blocks it either for that… Pourquoi lends it is important?

1. This proves to the trainer that you think… and dividing – who facilitates their work. And the face of the let it of the points of “brownie” are always good in this sector.

2. You are also less to be taken by surprised during the play by what occurs on the court because the you’ve started to look at and analyze (aka heating your brain) in pre-heatings Before the play even started.

Thus I’m not reducing my head, not grooving it in music of pre-heating of pre-play and not concentrating on the just… making my thang by Juste shagging and to run again to the blow in pre-heatings.

I’m informed, alert and helping my team while seeing, while dividing and by communicating what the members of opposition of the other team do. This competence of volley ball mentally prepares me to envisage what will occur. That how you gain in pre-heatings!

White Tailed Deer Rut – Pre-Rut Whitetail Strategies

White Tailed Deer Rut

The temperatures at night start to graze the bottom of the mercury barrel. The amount of available sunlight decreases on a daily basis, and whitetail bucks slowly go mad with wanton desire. Rubs and scrapes appear on the edges of fields and along trails in high-interaction areas. Deer activity intensifies during daylight hours as a sudden influx of animals crossing highways and country roads at night increases. This stage of the whitetail breeding season is commonly referred to as the pre-rut.

Selecting the right stand location at this time of year can result in a close encounter of the monster buck kind. It’s an extremely exciting time to be in the deer woods. There simply is no better time to identify, isolate and exploit the common behavioral traits of mature whitetails bucks than during the pre-rut.

Although the timing of the rut fluctuates across North America — the farther one travels south, the later the rut occurs — the tactics described here will work throughout the entire range of the white-tailed deer.

We all know what happens during the rut. Bucks are running around like wild dogs in a helter-skelter manner, chasing every hot doe that crosses their path for miles. Sure you see a lot of bucks during this time of the year, but patterning those bucks and trying to close-in on one particular buck is a nightmare at best.

So why am I discussing pre-rut whitetail deer tactics in the middle of February you ask? Because there is no better time to be searching the woods for the sign that will lead you to a pre-rut stage monster buck this coming fall than right now! White Tailed Deer Rut

Buck Lairs

Continuously monitoring and scouting various trail systems can lead to areas that big bucks prefer to roam. Virtually living solitary lives for most of the year, big whitetails often select the nastiest, most impenetrable piece of real estate in an area to call home. These areas are normally located in sections of timber where deer feel safe.

Cedar swamps, standing cornfields, briar thickets, brush-choked streambeds and pine plantations are all areas that offer protection and provide concealed daytime movement. For this reason, bucks will often establish their bedding areas — or core areas — nearby. Mature animals will routinely use this type of cover to move from one section of the woods to another.

Although bucks tend to let down their guard during the heat of the rut, safety is still their No. 1 concern throughout the pre-rut period. The odds of arrowing trophy deer are excellent in places where they feel secure. Identifying and studying these areas will earn you the opportunity to harvest a true wall hanger.

Setting up over trails that link feeding and bedding areas can still produce good results. Bucks will continue to use early-season trails, making short visits at food plots and crop fields as they slowly extend their range into neighboring territory. These excursions focus on assessing the breeding status of local doe concentrations, and storing energy for the rigors of the upcoming rut by quickly consuming high-energy chow.

In most cases, trophy bucks choose to travel on less-defined trails that skirt heavy cover. Rarely will you see a mature deer traveling through open timber or crossing an open field at this time. Keeping a low profile is standard operating procedure, but the one weakness bucks have in sustaining an anonymous lifestyle is the uncontrollable habit of leaving behind evidence of their existence. Accurately interpreting and processing this information can be a tremendous aid in devising a plan of attack. White Tailed Deer Rut

Benefits of Outdoor Recreation

Some people love to be outdoors and to be active while others simply do not. I have friends who would like nothing whatsoever with doing outdoor recreation like kayaking, jogging, walking, hiking and so on. It is very difficult for me to understand as being active outside is one of my most favorite things about this world we live in. For those who love the outdoors as much as I do this article will make a lot of sense. For those who only venture outside on the most beautiful of days, perhaps these words will inspire you to try a new sport or to enjoy a few breathes of fresh air.

What are the Benefits of Outdoor Recreation?

For one thing going outdoors and breathing some (hopefully) fresh air can be invigorating and do wonders to pump up our life force. I know for myself when I go for a run or take a kayaking trip I feel alive and free as well as happy and alert. I can be having the worst of days and feel completely loaded down by stress. If I go out and do some type of recreation outside I just about always come back with a clear head and a much happier outlook on life. For me, outdoor recreation is like therapy… the cheapest and best kind one could find.

Another great benefit of outdoor recreation is the bonding time. Whether you are with family or friends or even your favorite pet, doing outdoor sports and activities can help you to bond with your loved ones in a way that is difficult otherwise. It forces you to talk and interact while sharing the experience of some type of outdoor activity. Nothing could ever replace the long talks that I have had with my mom while out walking, the laughs my boyfriend and I have had while kayaking or the interesting stories my friends and I have shared while hiking. These are experiences and moments that could never be replaced and were all possible because we were sharing the outdoors together.

Did you Know that Outdoor Recreation can Save you Money?

We live in a world where there are many ups and downs and it is not always easy to feel light as well as secure. Outdoor recreation can be some of the cheapest activities possible. Going outside costs nothing. Hiking up a mountain costs nothing. Playing a game outside with your kids costs nothing. These are all outdoor activities that are easy on the pocket book and are usually a lot more fun than many other expensive outings.

Whether you like to walk or run, hike or climb, kayak or canoe… I would suggest that you get outside as much as possible and breathe in the air while we can. Outdoor recreation is one of the things that makes life so enjoyable and fun. For me, nothing could ever replace it and I couldn’t imagine a world without it. We are very lucky to have the beauty and the clean air that we do… I for one plan on taking full advantage of it.

Waxing and Maintaining Your Wooden Toboggan or Sled

By choosing a quality built wooden sled or toboggan, you will have minimal maintenance and years of fun. Constructed with solid birch, held together with stainless steel screws and coated with a marine grade finish, Mountain Boy sleds and toboggans are built to last. Cheaper toboggans are made with thinner material and often held together with staples. During use, the staples can lose their grip and the toboggan will begin to fall apart.

Toboggan

Wax the bottom of your wooden sled or toboggan for best performance (though you’ll find that it flies down the hill right out of the box). Waxing not only coats the bottom to increase speed, it creates a thin wax layer that sheds the film of water formed as snow melts beneath a speeding sled. Wax sticks best to a surface that is clean, warm, and dry, so bring the sled indoors and let it warm to room temperature prior to waxing.

Specialty ski or toboggan glide waxes are the best. These are available at most ski shops or sporting goods retailers. While you are there, pick up a plastic wax scraper and waxing cork.

Ski-go Easy Glide is an easy to use liquid glide wax. A solid crayon glide wax, such as Toko Toboggan Wax works well and is longer lasting. If you’re a cross country skier, you may already have glide wax. Just remember that it must be glide wax, not grip wax (which is used to help your skis grab onto the snow when you kick for uphill climbs). No ski wax? In a pinch try using paraffin wax used in many candles and for canning.

Waxing Steps:

  1. Wipe dirt off the bottom of the toboggan or sled. If there’s old, dirty wax on the bottom, remove what you can with a plastic putty knife or a plastic, cross country ski scraper.

  2. Dry and warm it with a hair dryer. Then, stroke the wax on evenly to the bottom side of the toboggan or sled using a cross country ski waxing cork. Hold a hair dryer on low heat close to the surface as you apply the wax. Warming the sled causes the pores of the wood to expand, allowing for the wax to melt and penetrate better.

  3. Allow the base to dry for at least 10 minutes after applying the wax.

  4. Remove any excess wax with the scraper tool, holding it at a 45 degree angle as it moves across the board.

  5. Check for any dry spots where the wax is too thin or has been totally scraped away by the scraper tool. Reapply a coat, if necessary, and scrape away the excess wax. When there are no rough spots, the toboggan is fully waxed.

  6. Wait for an hour or more to be certain everything is dry and fully absorbed before putting your sled or toboggan to the test on the slopes.

Storing and Maintenance

  1. After use, bring your wooden toboggan or sled inside to dry and wipe off any moisture.

  2. Use furniture oil to protect the top surfaces of the wooden toboggan or sled.

  3. Stow sleds in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Putting a toboggan lying flat on its running surface will help keep it from warping.

How To Meet And Approach Beautiful Women At The Beach

The beach can be a great place to meet women over the summer months. There are lots of single women there, the location is very relaxed, the women are very attractive, and the beach lends itself to being social.

The truth is that there aren’t that many tricks to this. It really boils down to you starting a conversation with the woman of your choice and going from there. With that said, I am going to give you some tips to help you meet women at the beach.

Your Confidence Is Important

No matter where you meet women your level of confidence is important, but at the beach it is maybe more important then anywhere else. Why? Because at the beach women will be wearing very little clothing and so will you. Those two things could make you extremely nervous and insecure.

You don’t want to be too self conscious about your body. Get yourself a tan before you go to the beach. Try a good sunless tanning solution to get rid of that whiteness before you go to the beach. You may also want to work out a little bit so that your not too soft. You don’t need to be the biggest guy, but a little muscle will help.

You should also get yourself a nice bathing suit. At the very least get yourself something that is in style for this summer. Some nice looking sunglasses should also help improve your look.

Having a nice t-shirt or other summer shirt will also help. I recommend that you approach women with your shirt on if you do have a nice body. It shows the woman that your not trying to impress her.

What To Bring

You should bring just about anything you can think of that would get a woman to interact and socialize with you.

– A Frisbee
– A volleyball
– Beach ball
– A football
– Surfboard (If you know how to surf)
– Sunscreen lotion or oil
– A blanket
– A deck of cards
– Ice and drinks
– Snack and food

How To Meet Her

Go where the biggest crowds are. That is the easiest way to meet women at the beach. Try any of the following:

– Borrow some of her lotion
– Ask her if she would like to throw the Frisbee
– Invite her for a drink
– Just say “Hi” and make small conversation
– Move around. As women walk around you can say “Hi” to them
– Have a question to ask her and her friends.
– Get her opinion on something

Very standard and straightforward stuff. Not all women will be receptive to your approach, but some will be.

Conclusion

As you can see meeting women at the beach is a great idea. Just make sure you aren’t like most men who stair at women. If that’s all your going to do then there is no point in even going to the beach.

Summer At Breckenridge

As presented in http://ift.tt/1Z90j8E

While my skis are gathering dust and rust in the basement I’m going half-crazy with downhill withdrawal.  It seems that I can’t do much about my beautiful ski edges slowly crusting over, but getting downhill?… well that’s a different story.

Leave your skis and boards alone for the summer and head out west to Colorado for some summer fun.  If you’re thinking that Colorado without 100 inches of snow is like music without soul, you couldn’t be more wrong.  The music of the mountains is played in a slightly different key in the summer, but it’s still powerful and enticing.  The range of activities is a vibrant chromatic spectrum ranging from the simple to the sublime.

This summer my family & I packed up the mini-van, loaded the bikes on the rear-rack and pointed the nose west toward beautiful Colorado.  Driving from Wisconsin to Colorado provides what seems like endless scenes of bucolic prairie, corn fields, and other flat (really, really damn flat) landscapes.  It may seem like a scene out of “National Lampoon’s Family Vacation@” but I drove all of Hwy-80 West without once spotting Christie Brinkley in a red Ferrari convertible, and I assure that I looked!

We sojourned in the little village of Frisco, CO at a centrally located condo.  Easy access to biking, hiking, and right down the road from one of the great summer recreation areas: Breckenridge.  You can get to this gem in less than two hours from Denver following I-70 (just west of the Eisenhower tunnel) to Hwy-9.  The center of summer activities at Breck is at the base of Peak 8.  There one can find the lifts which will take you up the mountain on either chair-5 or the Colorado SuperChair.

Less than two months after concluding its 39th ski season, the Breckenridge Ski Resort ushered in summer with the opening of its Peak 8 Fun Park. Resort officials say summer attractions at Peak 8 have come a long way from 23 years ago when the resort opened the state’s first alpine slide, dubbed The SuperSlide, which is a half-mile long from top to bottom. Other day guest services include Amaze’n Breckenridge, a wooden maze where participants race against the clock, the SuperPutt miniature golf course and Alpine BBQ.

Mountain biking, hiking, and Colorado SuperChair rides are available at Peak 8 and Peak 9 activities include horseback riding and mountain biking.

SuperSlide single ride tickets are $8 for adults 13 and older and $7 for children 7-12 (children 6 and under ride free with a paying adult). Multi-ride tickets are available as well. SuperPutt is $8 per person for adults, $6 for children; Amaze’n Breckenridge costs $5 for adults and $4 for children for the first trip into the maze, additional same day maze visits are available for $2 each.  Rides on the Colorado SuperChair cost $5 individually.

The Resort features more than 30 miles of mountain bike trails for abilities ranging from beginner to expert. Bike rentals include new bikes with both front suspension and full suspension. Rentals (which include a bike helmet) start at $12 for a front suspension bike and $18 for a full suspension bike. Children’s bikes start at $8 per hour. Trail and lift passes are available for $8 for single rides; $18 for all day. Children pay $6 for single lift rides and $12 for all-day lift and trail access.

And for those who wish to experience all the different possibilities available, there’s the  Activity Pass costing between $45 and $50 (depending on the week) allowing the holder unlimited use of the SuperSlide, SuperPutt, and bike transport on the Colorado SuperChair. The Breckenridge Fun Park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day (the last ride up the Colorado SuperChair is at 4:30 p.m.).  Once you’ve got your lift pass, you’re ready to hit the mountain and have some fun.

The SuperSlide is a set of three half-pipe tubes reached by Chair 5.  If you can picture a bobsled run two-feet wide and half-mile long snaking its way down a blue ski run in the middle of summer, you’ve got a good image of the SuperSlide.  The tracks are stratified into three general classes of “drivers”: slow, medium, and fast.  I’d love to give you readers a review of the slow and medium tracks, but I only rode the fast track.  Is there any other way to live?  Each rider is given a “sled” to pilot while in the tube, this is a really clever device just big enough to get one’s butt and feet onto it.  The only control the sled has is the speed-stick, a small handle sticking up between your knees.  Control is simple: push forward – go fast, pull back – slow down, then just ride the track.  Leaning into the turns helps keep the speed of the sled and provides that cool high-G feeling.

A properly driven sled can make the SuperSlide a heart-pounding adrenaline rush. On the other end of the spectrum, I saw grandparents with their grandchildren riding the slow track and having a great time, too.  I saw one senior rider navigating the track with her knee in a hinge-brace, I wanted to applaud.  Sure.. it lacks the total freedom of carving S-turns in fresh powder, but hey! it’s summertime.  Relax and catch a sled ride under Colorado’s beautiful sapphire blue sky.  Would you rather be at work?

If there’s a downside to the SuperSlide, it would be that the lines for the lift can get pretty long.  the longest I waited was about 40 minutes, and that was during the middle of the day.  Early and late in the day the line for the SuperSlide lift is almost non-existent.  So, plan your day accordingly.  When the lines for the SuperSlide start getting long, it’s the perfect time to grab a set of wheels and head up the mountain to do some mountain biking.

Breck has a great bike rental facility which will set each rider up with a great bike for the trails.   My wife and I both got full-suspension Gary Fisher and Cannondale bikes and helmets (required) and prepared for my first time on any mountain ever.  Before the rental guys let anybody out onto the slopes they require that you watch a short video.  While I think that it’s probably a legal CYA thing for the resort, it provided some good hints for Breck’s rocky and rutted bike trails.  We took the Colorado SuperChair to the Vista Haus where the lift turned around and prepared for the ride down.  I chose the Pioneer Trail to ride, it is rated for all riders as beginner/intermediate.  The Pioneer Trail is a 3.7 miles long pathway with mostly rocky and loose terrain with hairpin switchbacks.  The great bike I had rented cruised over the rough crud and slippery dust covered stones easily.  As we worked our way down the mountain we meandered in open slopes and through shady cuts through the trees.  The ride seemed challenging the first time, but then as I acclimated to the geography of the incline my confidence increased and the ride became easier.

A quiet moment between sliding and biking was spent on the Breck’s SuperPuttm, a small putt-putt golf course at the base of the lifts.  While not a heart stopping thrill, it did provide some truly needed relaxation time between mountain sports.  Coincidently there is also a food vending operation here, too.  It’s BBQ style food: burgers, dogs, etc. cooked up fresh in the mountain air, good enough to satisfy a high altitude hunger, and certainly conveniently located.  Hiking around Breck you can discover stunning vistas and colorful fields full of mountain flowers.  Be sure to take enough time to shed the shackles of your regular routine and really enjoy the atmosphere.

I’m glad that I had the opportunity to do Breck in the summer.  In addition to the wonderful activities immediately at the Breckenridge resort, there is a cornucopia of other things to see and do in the area.  Hiking and rafting are high on my list and I wouldn’t miss them for anything.  Kayaking on still water is another very approachable activity for the inexperienced or the whole family.

In Europe the people refer to time away from home and work as a “holiday” instead of a vacation.  I like that concept, and consider my trips to the mountains in winter and summer as holidays.  The glory and majesty of the Colorado Rockies is a holiday from my Wisconsin reality which includes work and other mundane tasks.  so, advice to my readers, go to the mountains.  Summer, winter, or any time you can get away.  Make your own special holiday.

Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, SC

Although Mt. Pleasant has many public elementary and middle schools, all students attend one public high school, Wando High.  This new school was recently built to hold the more than 3,000 students who attend.  Whether you’re considering buying a home in Mount Pleasant or already live in the area, rest assured knowing that you’re zoned for one of the best public high schools in all of Charleston.  And, even if you’re not a teacher or parent, the good public schools in Mount Pleasant can still help with your real estate investment since high quality schools are a major factor in the demand for Mount Pleasant real estate.

I’ve divided this article into three sections so that you can learn more about Wando High School’s academic achievements, its wide range of after school activities, and its fantastic athletic program.

Academic:  The South Carolina Annual School Report Card (which rates the state’s public schools) has given Wando High the highest rating possible for five straight years.  Also, at Wando, students have the option to complete a major in order to help them narrow the search for a future career.  While most of these students choose Arts and Humanities as their major, the other options include Business and Information Systems; Math, Science, and Engineering; and Health, Human, and Public Services.

After school activities:  Wando High School’s marching band has been state champions for the past four years.  The band also has the most All-State players of any high school in South Carolina.  The school also has been named best student newspaper in the state for nine straight years (and it has even been named a best student newspaper in the entire southeast).  Wando’s JROTC has received the highest possible rating from the Air Force for the last four years.  At All-State, their choral program earned third place this past year.  In addition, students can choose among a wide range of activities to suit their interests (from sailing to an ocean science bowl team, guitar club, film, bowling, and chess, just to name a few).

Athletic:  Wando is number one in the state’s forty-eight AAAA high schools overall for their athletic program.  It has a total of 19 varsity teams.  The girls’ tennis team has been state champs for five years in a row.  The boys’ track have also recently been named state champions.  Volleyball, baseball, and girls’ soccer have won Lower State Champions also in the past four years.  Fourteen of Wando’s sports teams have won regional championships as well.  In addition to the usual football, basketball, etc. that are expected at any high school, Wando also offers sports that are becoming increasingly popular in both public and private schools, such as golf.  Their Lacrosse team is even considered one of the top club programs in South Carolina.

Teaching Kids Fitness Training

Today, kids fitness training is important more so than in years past, because kids do not always have the exercise or healthy meals that they need. This has become a problem with obesity and poor health conditions. Some fitness centers even offer the services of a personal trainer for children.

There is another way to keep kids healthy without spending money on personal trainers and fitness centers. Most recreation departments and schools have programs set up during the year for kids to workout, play group games, and just do things that interest them.

Recreation Department Activities

Recreation departments offer after school, evening, and weekend activities for kids and families. This is the perfect time for kid fitness training to begin. There is no time like the present to start a healthy lifestyle for children. Since kids usually only go to school where they sit in a classroom except for gym class, they may need some extra-curriculum activities where gym teachers work with the child doing some form of fitness training. This may be gymnastics, swimming, or even some sports game such as indoor volleyball, golf lessons, or basketball.

School Programs

Schools recognize the need for kids fitness training and offer activities such as football, baseball, volleyball, soccer, and golf as a way to get them involved with sports and fitness. These activities also require traveling if the kids are performing in sport activities. The children learn responsibly, fitness, and how to eat healthy. They also learn about things in life other than video games, drugs, and drinking.

There is also cheerleading and band for fitness. Most parents do not consider band a fitness program, but it is because the kids have to learn how to breathe properly and practice good posture. Bands also perform for parades and other events that require movement.

Kids Fitness Training Centers

If school programs and recreation department programs are not what you want for your child, you can check with many fitness centers that offer programs for kids. These programs are geared more towards cardio and strength training. They are all monitored and assessed while the kids are enrolled. Children will also receive diet and nutrition advice and learn about lifestyle choices.

Kids will have to keep on a routine to see a life change. Parents also need to be supportive and make sure that they continue to attend sessions.

Karate and Other Type Programs

Karate is another form of fitness training that teaches the kids life values and another form of art. With these programs, the children learn self-discipline, which is needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. These programs are beneficial for all kids that need some fitness and discipline in their lives.

As you can see, there are many ways for children to stay healthy. Kids fitness training does not have to mean exercise per say, it can be karate, sports, or even band instead. As with any activity, they have to learn how to be healthy to stay fit.

Softball Equipment is Very Expensive!

For those of you that have a Daughter in ASA Fastpitch Softball you know that the right softball equipment can be very expensive.

Then the first time you see your daughter tossing it into the truck or all over her room, you want to pull your hair out.  Well actually you want to do something else, but we won’t go there.

For the longest time we didn’t think too much about it until we started buying two hundred and three hundred dollar softball bats and expensive softball gloves. Not to mention softball sliding shorts and softball batting gloves.

Once they have played for a few years you also start collecting things like bug spray, chap stick, sun tan lotion, softball face shields, asa softball rule books, and on and on.

This last time we went to the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament keeping track of her softball equipment even became a bigger concern.

Why?

Because we went from one field to another and to try and carry all her softball equipment individually would have been impossible, not to mention embarrassing.

The older she got the more important everything became.  Like I mentioned earlier the softball face shield. This is a great way to protect your daughters face if she plays infield or pitcher. Of course when she was younger the balls weren’t hit hard enough to matter, but now that she is playing third base and pitching they come screaming down the line in High School Softball.

We finally broke down and purchased a softball carrying bag that immediately became the most important part of all her softball equipment. We no longer were hunting for her equipment right before a game.

Yes this was a typical ritual that we went through prior to having a bag to carry her softball equipment. Her mother and I would ask her, let’s see, about a million times, if she had all her stuff together. Then we would get into the truck and all of a sudden she would scream out, where’s my batting gloves or sliding shorts.

The world would come to an end for a moment and then everyone would rush to find the item(s). Of course the whole time her mother and I would be telling her “Didn’t we ask you if you had all your stuff together?”  Shame on us, but now we don’t go through that any more.

Anyway, good luck and by the way if you haven’t already read in my blog my daughter’s team came in third as a sophomore team in the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament. Did I say that she won defensive player of the year for her team. This is kind of a proud father speaking by the way if you didn’t notice.

See below for where you can go to keep track of my daughter’s quest to earn a College Scholarship by playing Softball.

Thank you and God Bless you!

The Role of Agility Training for Tennis Players

Agility is such an important component when it comes to an athlete being fast. Tennis requires the athlete to be fast over short distances, in multiple directions and have the ability to develop explosive starts from various positions.

Agility training is sports specific and it has to simulate the exact movements required by your sport. For athletes that require linear speed then agility training will have little benefit.

Agility refers to the ability of an athlete to speed up, slow down and change direction while maintaining balance and control. Athletes in sports such as soccer, football, netball, basketball, lacrosse and tennis are just a few sports where athletes need to be agile.

Trainers who believe that one drill fits all do not understand the true meaning of sports specificity! Greater improvements will be found when training for your sport.

Characteristics of Being Agile for Tennis Players:
Changing direction quickly
Possessing good flexibility
Ability to react quickly to various situations
Twisting
Turning
Ability to stop suddenly
Side-stepping
Back peddling
Multi-tasking
Combining multiple fitness components (speed, agility, power)
Ability to perform a skill while maintaining balance (hitting a forehand on the run)

Being agile is also position specific. For example in soccer a midfielder will be required to possess all the above characteristics. A goal keeper will also require additional abilities such as diving, rolling, get-ups after being on the ground, jumping from a variety of positions and performing different skill tasks while under a considerable amount of pressure.

In tennis, you will also want to differentiate between the movements of a serve and volley player to that of a baseliner.

A serve and volley player requires an explosive take off immediately after completing the serve. A split step is then performed near the service line prior to the player moving left, right or forwards to hit a volley. The agility aspect comes into play when the athlete must be able to quickly respond to a return hit any where on their side of the court.

Baseline players tend to focus a little more on their lateral movements of going from the forehand side to the backhand side. This lateral movement requires the athlete to accelerate to a ball, stop, pivot, mogul and then recover back to position. At any time they may need to push off and sprint forwards for a short ball.

Key Components that Will Assist the Athlete to be More Agile:
Increasing flexibility
Increasing your strength
Increase your power
Improving explosive starts
Improved reaction speed
Performing a variety of sports specific drills
Improved core strength
Free from injuries
Appropriate footwork to assist in performing the required skill
Using the correct technique
Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear
Training on the surface that you play on
Develop all areas of agility

Agility Drills for Tennis Should Include these Movements:
Sprinting forwards
Side-stepping
Back peddling
Bounding combinations with speed and agility
Footwork
Sudden changes in direction
Explosive starts
Recovery steps

5 Great Agility Drills for Tennis Players:
Agility box run
3 line agility test
Wave run agility test
“T” agility test
Bow tie agility drill

As a tennis coach or player you will need to conduct a needs analysis of your movement which is best done by watching a video of yourself playing. This will allow you to see exactly how you move, your strengths and weaknesses, rate your reaction time, strength and power in acceleration and ability to recover from a stationary position. Then put together a plan of action to improve your on court speed and agility.

Japanese and Sport

The observation and to take part in various sports are popular activities in Japan appreciated by people of all the ages and sectors. The origin of the sports in Japan goes up with the twelfth century, when the known military nobility under the name of samouraïs presented events such as the kendo, (Japanese stick enclosing) kyudo, (shooting with the arc) and jujustu, (judo) with the populeux one. These sporting plays were established thereafter as martial arts during the time of edo (1600-1868), with the hearth on controlling the mental aspects of each activity in the hopes to raise the participant in a nobler and more transcendent level. These sports were passed to the bottom of the generation to the generation, and always continue to open out today. The sumo, which also maintains a long history like traditional martial arts, started it there roughly has 2.000 years of a ceremonious dance employed to amuse the gods of Shinto, and is considered the national sport of Japan . Today even the event includes the ritualistic elements derived from the religion of Shinto, such as throwing salt in the air with the ground at the beginning of each match as means of the purification symbolic system. The rules of the sumo are completely fundamental. Two fighters called the face of rikishi to far in a circular ring called a dohyo, and the fighter who touches initially the floor with any part of body other than the soles of his feet, or are eliminated from the ring by its adversary loses. The combat itself usually more in seconds, but on the rare occasions can last up to one minute or longer. Six tournaments are held throughout the year, each one which lasts 15 days.

Western sports were presented thereafter at Japan with the arrival of the restoration of Meiji, including the baseball in 1872. The baseball since then transformed into one of the spectacular sports most popular of the country , with enthusiastic thousands of ventilators occupying itself of the held professional plays each season in the stages found in all the principal cities in all the country. The plays are also emission of phase to television several times per week, comprising teams of the two leagues, (the exchange and the Pacific), which make of six teams each one. The last years also a rise in the number of Japanese players saw who currently play successfully in the American principal leagues, and whose plays are covered intensively by the media in Japan. The teams of university and college are also numerous, and the whole the championship of baseball of college of Japan held each summer and televised in all the country is looked by million. Competing with the baseball as nations the popular majority of sport are the football, which made the beginning of the it in 1993 with the introduction of the J-League, a professional league of football being composed of two divisions, J1 and J2. Football had been played by amateurs during many years in Japan, but the call of the it accelerated after the national team of the football of Japan took part in the cup of the world in France for the first time in 1998.

To follow narrowly behind football for popularity to Japan east golf. The pole of saving in bubble of the 80’s and the multitude which followed introduced the golf quickly into the first rank as a one of the most popular plays in the country. Appreciated in the past by only favoured a little, it developed soon in favour among the average “man of wages”, which employed it as means of prolonging its network of businesses by playing a round or two Sunday with the prospective customers. Adhesions in the prestigious clubs were then in such a request that they cost anywhere 100 to 400 million Yens, and were sought then by the large companies which hoped to be established in the rows of such which were often closing more businesses on the course of golf than of the room of conference. Because of the increase in the number of players and limited space available, the prospect to play the golf for the average person in Japan is always expensive, to make the average of the prices between 20.000 Yens and rises for 18 holes, with fees of carriage and lunches usually not included. Another consideration when to appear the cost to play the golf in Japan east that “of the hole in an insurance”. Those which are lucky (or rather unhappy) to descend the evasive “hole in one” celebrate the event by paying the fees of all the member of comrade that day, as well as to grant the expensive gifts on participants. Consequently the insurance was made available to buy to cover the residual expenditure for these enough skilful to make this difficult projectile.

As well as to appreciate the golf, the baseball, and football, the Japanese due to an increase in the spare time available these last years take part now more than always front in a choice of relative activities by sport including/understanding to pulsate, formation of weight, long operation moved away, Swedish gymnastics, aerobics, dancing jazz, baseball, swimming, badminton, volley ball, the cycle, tennis, table tennis, billiards, and the bearing. The large fôlatre risk like the diving of diving-suit, slipping blow, and with rising horse also gain popularity.

Why Your Child Needs a Volleyball Summer Camp

“I used to sleep, eat, breathe volleyball. Now I have that with my kids.”
-Kerri Walsh
Needless to say, volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world. With around 950 million fans around the world, volleyball is the fifth most popular sport in the world, trailing behind tennis, field hockey, cricket, and soccer. Believe it or not, volleyball is way ahead of hugely popular American sports NBA, MLB, and the NFL. So, if your child is showing interest in this popular sport, you should encourage him. He will certainly have a bright future if he gets better at this sport.

Like any other sport, a game of volleyball needs agility, strength, and stamina. However, the success in this sport depends not only on these factors, but also on how clever you are on the volleyball court. Being clever on the volleyball court means how many aggressive techniques you have mastered in and how well you perform on that day. And to perform to the zenith, rigorous training is required. That’s why volleyball summer camps are important. If you start a search for volleyball summer camps in your locality, you will see there are many organizations offering volleyball summer camps for individuals of all ages.

The duration of these volleyball summer camps varies: some summer camps are for 1 week, while some organizations offer summer camps for 2-3 weeks. There are 1-day summer camps as well. As options are many when it comes to choosing a summer camp for your child, you can select a summer camp as per your child’s convenience. In a volleyball summer camp, the training is usually focused on the fundamental and developing overall game by technique training. A strong emphasis is placed on all individual skills, such as serving, passing, hitting and defense. Children also learn some team concepts.

In a good volleyball summer camp, 60% time is reserved for technique skills & drills and 40% time is reserved for control scrimmage training. So if your child happens to join a good volleyball summer camp, he is going to learn many useful techniques to be successful on the volleyball court.

When it comes to choosing a volleyball summer camp for your child, you should do your homework. Don’t make any decision in haste. You should always choose an organization that has experienced trainers on board to provide training. Remember that a summer camp is a sort of investment, so make a decision after considering all factors.

Good ball handling

Introduction to Basic Volleyball

The worst situation that a volleyball team could be in is to show up at a game without knowing what skills they needed to win the game. Hitting the ball, being in the right place, and playing competitively can help to win the game as well as gain confidence in the sport. Focusing on the basics for volleyball can help you to gain the skills you need for every game.

1. Serving. This is what always starts the game and helps to keep the game. There are two basic types of serves. One is overhand; where the player will throw the ball in the air first, then hit it. The second is underhand, where the server will hold the ball and swing their other arm underneath the ball to hit it. There are a variety of other serves beyond these basics, all which help to get the ball over the net, and get the game going.

2. Pass or reception. This is usually set up by the setter of the game. It is used in order to take the ball and give it to the other players on your own team. They will then have the ability to put the ball to the other side like they want to. You can either pass by the forearm or by hitting the ball overhead.

3. Tip. A tip is used as a way to trick the other team into thinking that the ball is going further than it will. The player will hit the ball lightly, making it go over the net but not too far into the other player’s area so that they can’t hit it back.

4. Dig. This is the ability for a player to save the ball from hitting the court after it has been spiked. It usually requires a player to slide underneath the ball on the court or to dive underneath the ball.

5. Rebound. This occurs when the ball stays on one side, making the players rebound, or take the ball back.

With all of these different hits for a ball, you will want to make sure that the players have the ability to move freely and effectively with every move. With all of these different hits, the players will need to connect where they want to hit the ball with the way that their feet move. For example, a dig will require the feet to move under the body in order to save the ball. A serve will require more balance on both feet in order to hit the ball more effectively. This will be important to keep in mind as you are training players.

The basics of volleyball hits can lead a long way when you are working towards playing the game. If you are finding ways to teach techniques to players, this is the place to start. It will allow everyone to have a good chance at controlling and hitting the ball, no matter what the set up is.

How to Coin Shoot in a Park With a Metal Detector

How To Coin Shoot in a Park With a Metal Detector.

This article will present a basic system for hunting for coins in a public park.

One of the first things you should do is to check with your city, county parks and recreation department to see if you are allowed to use a metal detector in their parks. If so they may require a permit. Most permits are free. They usually are good for a year.

Items you want to take to the park are;

* Metal detector with at least a 6″ coil

*Flathead Screw driver or other digging instrument.

*String or rope to line out your search area.

*Sand Scoop for sand play box, volleyball court or any other play area with sand.

*Water for drinking. Maybe some snacks.

If you have lived in the area for a long time you have an advantage in locating some good older parks in your city.

Sit down and think about how certain location were 20, 30, 40 years ago. Maybe you went to a local school some 25 years ago. That would be a good place to start.

Later on I am going to tell you how we found gold in a city park, worth over $300.

I like coin shooting parks early in the morning. Not so many lookie lookers. Some of the best places to coin shoot at schools and parks are around and under swings, slides, jungle gyms and similar play ground equipment. Basketball courts, Volleyball courts are very good. This is were the sand scoop comes in handy. Don’t forget any concession stands at the parks.

Before you map out your search, sit down and look over the search area. Visualize you doing what a person would be doing at the site. Lets use a volleyball court with sand base. The first area you want to search is around the fringe of the court in the grass. People will sit along the edge to watch the amateurs play. When you get a hit, use your flat nose screw driver to push down to the item and rock it back and forth. This will generally move the coin or item to the surface.

The next area of the court is in the sand. You can lay out some cord to do a grid search so you don’t overlook any section of the court. When you get a hit, use your sand scoop. We have found coins, jewelry, rings in many sand courts.

Kids seam to have a lot of loose change these days, far cry from my days, when fifty cents let me in the movies, two hot dogs and a coke. Check under the swing sets, you can locate some nice change there.

Coin Shooting is fun. Takes patients and control but sometimes it pays big.

Dodge Ball Safety

Dodge Ball has been around for many years it is played mostly in physical education class but there are also leagues popping up all over the place.  While adult league can get away with being rough it is a good idea to play as safe as possible in physical education class.

Basic Play: There are 4-10 players per a team/side.  The dodge balls are placed on the center line at the start of the game and the players start at the back line.  The number of balls depends on the number of players in the game.  You can have enough balls for each player or a couple less to make it interesting.  The ref of the game yells dodge ball and the players run to the center line to collect the balls.  Once a ball is collected the player needs to run back behind the safety line before he or she can throw the ball at a person on the opposing team.  If person is hit by a ball they are out of the game and sit in the out area.  The only way someone can get back in the game is if a person on their team catches a ball that is thrown at them.  If a ball is caught then a player from the side that the ball was caught goes back into the game.  The object of the game is to get everybody on the opposing team out.

There are many different kinds of balls that can be used in the game of dodge ball but the safest is the Rhino skin foam dodge ball.  This ball is not only safe but affordable.  The ball measure 6″ so it is perfect for any size hands.  These balls are made tough so they can take the abuse of a physical education class.  These balls come in rainbow sets of 6 as well and are available at http://ift.tt/1mGyNvx.

While dodge ball may seam like a rough activity and safety should be a concern at all times, the game offers many valuable skills.  It teaches teamwork, agility, and situational awareness.  Situational awareness is a term used by fighter pilots, it is basically the skill of always knowing what is going on in your surroundings.  Being observant to the point that your defensive guard can react to any incoming obstacle.  This is a skill that should be developed throughout ones life and is useful in situations from driving to business negotiations.  So next time you are teaching dodge ball, just think, you may be training a future fighter pilot!

Early Specialization And Youth Athletic Development

When I coached in Ireland, young Irish players believed that basketball greatness was beyond their genes. They said that Irishmen were not athletic. Meanwhile, the Irish Rugby Team crushed its opponents in its preparation for the 2007 World Cup. While basketball and rugby require different skills, each features athletes who are fast, quick, agile, strong and coordinated. If Ireland produces world class rugby talent with these athletic qualities, why do Irish basketball players believe this athleticism is beyond their gene pool?

Few people see the athletic similarities between rugby and basketball because we focus on the sport-specific skills. We miss the similar athletic skills required to play each sport: agility, quickness, footwork, balance, explosiveness, anaerobic conditioning, strength and more.

Because we concentrate on sport-specific skills, more coaches encourage early specialization – when an athlete plays one sport year-round to the exclusion of other sports before puberty. Athletic development is a process, and early specialization attempts to speed the process.

However, is the goal to dominate as a 10-year-old? Early specialization leads to early peaks. Players improve their sport-specific skills more rapidly than those who participate in a wide range of activities. However, those who develop deeper and broader athletic skills have a better foundation. While those who specialize early hit a plateau, the others improve as they dedicate more time to enhancing their sport-specific skill.

If a 10-year-old specializes in basketball, he improves his dribbling, shooting and understanding of the game more rapidly than his peers who play multiple sports, while his peers develop many other athletic skills. If his peers play soccer, they improve their vision, agility, footwork and more; if they play football, they improve acceleration and power. When these athletes specialize in basketball at 15-years-old, they have broader athletic skills and an advantage against the player who specialized early and hits a plateau in his skill development.

“The growth of sports has led to parents a lot of times having their kids specializing at a young age [in order to] get a college scholarship,” Dr. Brenner says. “There is nothing to show that starting this young is going to get them there.”

The truth, however, is that the players who receive the scholarships are the better athletes. The irony of early specialization is that players specialize to “gain a competitive advantage” or “to get ahead,” but the better athlete has the advantage. Before one can be great at any sport, he must be an athlete, and early specialization impedes overall athletic development.

USC Football Coach Pete Carroll says, “I want guys that are so special athletically, so competitive that they can compete in more than one [sport] here at USC. It’s really important that guys are well-rounded and just have this tendency for competitiveness that they have to express somewhere.”

Meanwhile, University of North Carolina Women’s Soccer Coach Anson Dorrance says that he recruits speed because he feels that his staff can teach a fast player to play soccer, but they cannot teach a skilled soccer player to be really fast.

Because we misunderstand the athletic development process and place a higher priority on sport-specific skills like shooting and dribbling, we miss the athletic skills that underlie every sport-specific technique and underestimate the importance of general athletic skills in sports performance. When we see a player catch, shoot and make a jump shot, we notice his shooting technique. However, we miss the athletic skills like deceleration, hand-eye coordination, visual acuity, fine motor control, depth perception, balance, strength, power and coordination. Without these general athletic skills, the player would not exhibit the perfect technique.

Many basketball coaches prefer their players to play basketball year-round rather than playing soccer or volleyball. Coaches feel like the court time that the players miss is far more valuable than the time wasted playing another sport.

When we learn that LeBron James played high school football or Steve Nash played soccer and did not play basketball until around 12-years-old or that 2009 NBA 2nd Round pick Chase Budinger was a high school All-American in volleyball, we figure that these players could play multiple sports because they are great athletes. However, we never credit their late specialization and multi-lateral development as the reason why they are great athletes.

As an example, Texas Tech University Football Coach Mike Leach credits soccer for New England Patriots’ Wide Receiver Wes Welker’s quickness and vision which make him nearly unstoppable as a slot receiver, as Welker played high school soccer and football before choosing football at TTU.

More children choose to specialize in one sport at earlier and earlier ages to improve their competitive opportunities despite the arguments against early specialization:

“In 1985, a study by the Swedish Tennis Association suggested that early specialization is unnecessary for players to achieve high performance levels in tennis. Among other things, this study found that the players who were part of the Swedish tennis ‘miracle’ of the 1980s, including the great Bjorn Borg, were keenly active in a range of sports until the age of 14 and did not begin to specialize until about the age of 16” (Launder).

The more a player develops his general athletic skills, the higher his ceiling in his chosen sport. Early specialization leads to early sport-specific development and immediate performance gains. However, early peaks accompany the early development, and over the course of one’s athletic career, the early specialization has a detrimental effect. In the Swedish study, “what was most significant was that many players who had been superior to the eventual elite while in the 12-14 age group had dropped out-been burned out-of the sport,” (Launder).

Considering that less than 3% of high school basketball players play competitive college basketball, what do children gain through specialization? What do children lose when they specialize early?

Sidewalk Cycling In Arizona

Arizona law does not prohibit riding your bike on the sidewalk, but does that mean it is safe to do so?  Cycling is a very popular outdoor activity, especially in Arizona.  However, Arizona bike laws seem to be a topic of confusion for many people.  When it comes down to it, laws are put into place for our safety and the safety of others.  Therefore, if you choose to enjoy the Arizona roads via bicycle, familiarizing yourself with the laws and understanding the dangers is imperative.

The laws in Arizona regarding riding bikes on sidewalks differ from city to city; however, the dangers are the same wherever you are.  Riding on sidewalks is not completely prohibited because we have to take into consideration areas where biker safety on the road is extremely reduced, and children.

Avid cyclers seem to disagree on what is best for their safety, but the majority seem to believe riding in the roadway is safer than on the sidewalk.  Fear seems to be what guides cyclists who choose the sidewalk.  Fear of vehicles is a valid fear, but is the idea that the sidewalk is a safer place valid?  Actually, a large portion of accidents involving bicycles and automobiles happen when a bike rider is using the sidewalk instead of the roadway.

Often bike riders using the sidewalk decide to ride against traffic, believing that they are safer when they can see traffic coming towards them.  However, drivers exiting private drives, parking lost and side streets oftentimes do not check traffic to the right when they are turning right, because oncoming traffic is coming from the left.  This results in car-bike collisions.  As I constantly say to my children “If you get in an accident with a car, who wins?  Even they know:  The car, every time!

Another thing: Cyclists sometimes forget that they are a danger to pedestrians.  The statistics are hard to find but the fact is that many people are injured every year after being struck by bicyclists.  Head injuries are common in these types of accidents.  As it so happens, my wife sustained a head injury due to this type of collision many years ago when she was a student at ASU.  She was crossing the street, she did not see the cyclist (as he was shielded by a large truck) and he apparently did not see her either.  They collided, and my wife was knocked unconscious.  She suffered from a concussion for several months.

If you choose to ride your bike on the sidewalk, we suggest following these guidelines to help everyone avoid injury.

1. Ride slow and yield to pedestrians – Sidewalks were built for pedestrians, not fast moving traffic, therefore there are a variety of obstacles for someone traveling at a faster speed such as mail boxes, signs and light posts.

2. Be alert and watch carefully all points of entry to the roadway – drivers generally pull all the way up to the road when getting ready to turn onto it and are not expecting fast moving vehicles coming down the sidewalk, especially from the opposite direction of the traffic flow, so they likely will not see you.

3. Use Crosswalks – if you must cross the street wait until you come to a crosswalk and make sure to walk your bike thru the crosswalk. Arizona law prohibits riding a bike through a crosswalk.

4. Make eye contact with drivers – When you are crossing the street or a roadway entry point and a vehicle approaches, do not cross until you have made eye contact with the driver, you are sure they see you and grant you non-verbal permission to proceed.  If this does not happen—WAIT!!

5. Ride with traffic not against it – Always ride in the same direction that traffic is flowing.

Please remember, these are just some suggestions for safer riding, I have not included all the bike safety tips available.  The internet offers lots of valuable information for cyclists, try these two sites for more safety tips: http://bicyclesafe.com/ and http://ift.tt/20Cn2KH .
